Cremation jewelry is jewelry that allows you to preserve the ashes (cremains) of a loved one or pet, and carry them with you. This can be in the form of necklaces, bracelets, rings, charms, beads, or keychains. There are various types of cremation jewelry, some that have a container for the ashes or cremains, while others incorporate the ashes in resin or glass.
Cremains have traditionally been either interred, kept in large urns, or spread in a meaningful location. Cremation jewelry has grown in popularity because it allows family and loved ones to keep a small amount of ashes, which they can keep with them as a memorial and keepsake. This enables multiple people in a family to share in this special memorial, without needing to visit a grave or location to remember their departed.
Epoxy resin is a durable, hard substance with a glass-like luster that is regularly used in making crafts, furniture, and jewelry. Because resin starts as a liquid, which then hardens, it can be poured into molds, and can be used to suspend flowers, leaves, insects, hair, or ashes. There are a variety of colorants that also can add rich, deep colors, swirls, and gem-like sparkles.
Because of resin’s versatility and durability, it can be used to create a variety of objects, including necklaces, beads, rings, bracelets, and more.
When creating cremation jewelry, typically a small amount of ashes are mixed in layers, along with colors and pigments. Once hardened, the new ashes “gem” is then mounted as a necklace, ring, etc.
Similar to resin memorial jewelry, ashes can be preserved in glass to create necklaces, rings, and bracelets. There are several ways to create glass ashes jewelry. These include adding the ashes to glass as it’s blown, which can then be used as either jewelry, or glass ornaments. Or ashes can be layered between a “sandwich” of colorful glass pieces, which is then fired, creating a single fused glass piece. This can then be mounted in a necklace, ring, or bracelet.
The one problem with glass ashes jewelry is that because it is crafted from glass, it is more fragile than resin jewelry, or metal urn jewelry, so it is liable to crack, chip, or break with regular wear. Another limitation is that it can not be used to preserve dried flowers or hair due to the high heat of the melted glass.
Fillable cremation jewelry comes in a variety of sizes and shapes. For each there is either a small “well” that can contain a very small amount of ashes or keepsakes, or larger cylinder or vial type pieces that can not only accommodate more ashes or keepsakes, but are often water tight, so they can be used for various water or fluids (e.g., blood, holy water, etc.).
Fillable cremation is the easier of the processes, since you don’t have to send your loved one’s cremains to the jeweler, and then wait for production, and subsequent reshipping.
